Ghana launches its first FIFA-backed U-15 Girls Regional Colts League, creating a nationwide pathway for young female footballers and laying a strong foundation for the future of women’s football.

A New Chapter for Girls’ Football in Ghana Begins

Ghana has taken a bold and historic step in shaping the future of women’s football with the official launch of the FIFA-backed U-15 Girls Regional Colts League. Rolled out by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the competition kicked off in the Greater Accra Region, setting the pace for a nationwide grassroots movement that promises to redefine how young female talent is discovered and nurtured.

Under the FIFA League Development Programme, the Regional Colts Leagues will be staged across all 10 football regions of the country. The vision is clear: create a nationally coordinated, accessible, and structured pathway for girls under the age of 15 to transition smoothly from grassroots football into elite academies, professional clubs, and eventually, national teams.

For years, one of the biggest challenges facing women’s football in Ghana has been the absence of a consistent and unified development pathway at the grassroots level. Talented girls often fell through the cracks, relying on informal community teams or isolated school competitions. This new league directly addresses that gap.

It is not just a tournament—it is a system.

Building the Future from the Ground Up

Speaking at the launch, GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku described the league as a cornerstone for the long-term success of women’s football in Ghana. According to him, the U-15 league will:

  • Enhance early talent identification
  • Promote widespread grassroots participation
  • Ensure a smoother transition from youth football to elite levels
  • Strengthen the pipeline into national teams

He emphasized that sustained success at the highest level cannot happen by chance. It must be built deliberately, from the ground up.

“Success at the top is only sustainable when the foundations are strong,” he noted, describing the U-15 Girls Regional Colts Leagues as “critical to the future of Ghana’s women’s national teams.”

The message was unmistakable: the future Black Queens and future stars of African women’s football are being shaped today, on community pitches and astro turfs across Ghana.

More Than Football

Beyond technical development, the league is also designed to serve a broader social purpose. Mr. Simeon-Okraku highlighted the role of football in character building and empowerment, particularly for young girls.

At this formative age, the game offers more than goals and trophies. It teaches:

  • Discipline and teamwork
  • Confidence and leadership
  • Resilience and self-belief

In communities where opportunities for girls can be limited, structured sports provide a powerful platform for growth. The league therefore stands not only as a sporting intervention but also as a social investment in the next generation of Ghanaian women.

The GFA President reaffirmed the association’s commitment to women’s grassroots football and assured young players, parents, coaches, and clubs that this initiative is not a one-off event, but a long-term project backed by sustained support.

FIFA’s Strategic Backing

FIFA Technical Expert Thuba Bridgette Sibandda explained that the choice of the U-15 age group was intentional. According to her, FIFA is being deliberate in strengthening the development pathway at a stage where skills, habits, and passion for the game are formed.

By focusing on this age bracket, the programme aims to “solidify the foundation for the future of the game.”

She commended the GFA for strictly adhering to FIFA’s laid-down procedures, noting that this discipline has contributed significantly to the recent progress in football development in Ghana.

Her presence at the launch underscored FIFA’s confidence in Ghana’s vision for women’s football and its readiness to invest in structured, sustainable growth.

Madam Sibandda performed the ceremonial kick-off at the McDan La Town Astro Turf, alongside officials from the League Board and the GFA, officially ushering in the competition nationwide.

Action on the Pitch

The opening fixtures offered an early glimpse of the talent and excitement this league promises to deliver:

  • Ridge City Women edged Ideal Ladies 2–1
  • Epiphany New Gen defeated Accra Ladyz 2–0
  • Dangme South and Rock Ladies played out a goalless draw
  • Cabfix Ladies delivered a dominant 9–0 victory over Ga West Ladies

These results highlight both the competitive spirit and the developmental potential embedded in the league. For many of these girls, this is their first experience of an organized, nationally recognized competition.

A Vision That Extends Beyond Today

The launch of the U-15 Girls Regional Colts League signals a shift in mindset. Women’s football in Ghana is no longer being treated as an afterthought—it is being planned with structure, investment, and long-term vision.

By creating a clear pathway from childhood to elite football, Ghana is positioning itself to:

  • Discover talent earlier
  • Develop players more systematically
  • Build stronger national teams
  • Compete more effectively on the continental and global stage

More importantly, it sends a message to every young girl with a ball at her feet: your dream is valid, and the system is being built to support you.

This league is not just about today’s matches. It is about the players who will wear Ghana’s colours in the years to come. It is about rewriting the story of women’s football—starting from the grassroots and rising all the way to the world stage.

And in that sense, the first whistle of the U-15 Girls League marks not just the beginning of a competition, but the birth of a new era.
