Bawumia Thanks Team as NPP Primary Lead Emerges
Former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has struck a gracious and reflective tone after provisional results from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries indicated that he is in a commanding lead, with more than half of the votes counted across the country.
Speaking to party faithful and members of his campaign team at his campaign headquarters in Accra, Dr Bawumia described the contest as one of the most demanding internal elections in the party’s history. He emphasized that his strong showing so far was not the product of individual effort, but the result of collective sacrifice, organisation, and nationwide teamwork.
A Campaign Built on Collective Effort
Addressing supporters as results from various constituencies continued to arrive, Dr Bawumia expressed deep appreciation to those who worked tirelessly throughout the primary season. He noted that the campaign spanned every region of the country and required enormous logistical coordination and commitment.
According to him, the intensity of the race underscored the vibrancy of internal democracy within the New Patriotic Party, but also highlighted the importance of unity and discipline as the party prepares for future national contests.
He acknowledged that reaching this point would not have been possible without the dedication of the people who stood by him from the beginning of the campaign through to the vote-counting stage.
Praise for Campaign Leadership
Dr Bawumia singled out key figures within his campaign structure for special recognition. He praised the National Campaign Coordinator, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, describing his leadership as instrumental in keeping the campaign focused and disciplined.
He also commended Campaign Manager Fred Opare Ansah for overseeing day-to-day operations and ensuring that campaign activities across the country were well coordinated.
In addition, Dr Bawumia thanked Members of Parliament who openly endorsed his bid and actively participated in grassroots mobilisation. He noted that their involvement helped deepen the campaign’s reach and credibility among delegates.
Acknowledging Institutions and Stakeholders
Beyond his immediate campaign team, Dr Bawumia extended gratitude to a broad range of stakeholders who played roles in ensuring a smooth primary process. He thanked party executives at the national, regional, and constituency levels for their cooperation and commitment to transparency.
He also acknowledged the work of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, security agencies, and media organisations, noting that their combined efforts contributed to an orderly, peaceful, and credible internal election.
Such recognition, he said, reflects the importance of institutional integrity in sustaining democratic practices within political parties.
Honouring the Party’s Legacy
In a reflective moment, Dr Bawumia paid tribute to the founding figures and past leaders of the NPP, crediting them with building a strong ideological and organisational foundation for the party. He mentioned pioneers such as Adu Boahen, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, and outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
According to Dr Bawumia, the sacrifices and leadership of these figures shaped the party’s identity and prepared it for the challenges of modern governance. He described it as humbling to be entrusted with the opportunity to continue the work they began.
He also acknowledged the contributions of former Members of Parliament, many of whom played key roles in strengthening the party’s grassroots structures over the years.
Provisional Results Point to a Clear Lead
As vote collation continues, provisional tallies from several constituencies show Dr Bawumia leading in a number of key strongholds across the country. While final results are yet to be officially declared, the figures released so far place him firmly ahead of his challengers.
Party insiders say the margin reflects broad-based support across regions rather than reliance on isolated strongholds—a factor that could prove significant as the party looks ahead to the 2028 general elections.
Looking Beyond the Primaries
Despite the encouraging numbers, Dr Bawumia was careful not to sound triumphant. Instead, his remarks focused on gratitude, responsibility, and the need for unity once the final results are announced.
Political observers believe this approach may help ease post-primary tensions and encourage supporters of other aspirants to rally behind the eventual flagbearer.
As the NPP awaits the official declaration of results, Dr Bawumia’s message remains consistent: the primary contest was a collective journey, and whatever the final outcome, the party’s future success will depend on cohesion, mutual respect, and shared purpose.
