The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially begun preparations for one of its most significant internal democratic exercises by inaugurating a National Elections Committee to supervise its upcoming national executive elections.
The nine-member committee, inaugurated by the party’s Acting National Chairman, Danquah Smith Butey, will be responsible for ensuring that the election of the party’s next national leadership is conducted in a transparent, fair, and credible manner.
Former Suhum Member of Parliament Frederick Opare-Ansah will chair the committee, with former Deputy Finance Minister Abena Osei-Asare serving as Vice-Chairperson. The party’s National Director of Elections, Evans Nimako, has been appointed Secretary. Other committee members include Oboshie Sai Cofie, Anthony Abayifa Karbo, Salam Ama Appianin Damata, Eric Ntori, and Frank Davies, while the Ashanti Regional Chairman will join after the completion of the regional executive elections.
A Critical Moment for the NPP
The formation of the committee signals the official start of preparations for the NPP’s National Delegates Conference, scheduled for September 19, 2026, in Kumasi.
The conference is expected to elect a new national leadership that will guide the party through its rebuilding process following its defeat in Ghana’s 2024 general elections.
Key positions expected to be contested include:
- National Chairman
- General Secretary
- National Organiser
- National Treasurer
- National Women’s Organiser
- National Youth Organiser
- Other national executive positions outlined in the party’s constitution.
The committee is expected to develop the election timetable, supervise nominations, enforce the party’s constitutional guidelines, and oversee the voting process.
Why This Election Matters
Leadership elections within political parties often determine the direction and future competitiveness of the organization. For the NPP, these elections represent more than just choosing new executives—they are an opportunity to rebuild unity, restore public confidence, and redefine the party’s strategy ahead of future national elections.
Following its electoral setback in 2024, many party supporters will be looking for leaders capable of reconnecting with the grassroots, strengthening internal structures, and presenting a renewed vision for Ghana.
The credibility of the election process itself will therefore be closely watched by party members and political observers alike.
African360 Commentary
The inauguration of the National Elections Committee is a positive step toward strengthening internal democracy within the New Patriotic Party. Transparent and well-organized leadership contests help build confidence among party members and demonstrate a commitment to democratic principles.
However, the real test lies not only in conducting a peaceful election but also in ensuring that the elected leadership can unite the various factions within the party. Internal divisions have historically weakened political organizations, making unity after the elections just as important as the electoral process itself.
As the September 19 conference approaches, Ghanaians will be watching to see whether the NPP can use this transition to reposition itself as a strong and credible opposition capable of offering alternative policies and leadership.
Ultimately, the success of the process will depend on fairness, transparency, and the willingness of all stakeholders to respect the outcome of the elections.
Final Thoughts
The road to political recovery often begins with strong internal leadership. The establishment of the National Elections Committee marks an important milestone in the NPP’s efforts to reorganize and prepare for the future.
If the committee delivers a transparent and credible election, it could strengthen confidence within the party and lay the foundation for a more united and competitive NPP in the years ahead.
