Oliver Kahn Warns Julian Nagelsmann Over Potential Manchester United Job

African360 Sports | Premier League

Former Germany goalkeeper and Bayern Munich chief executive Oliver Kahn has urged Julian Nagelsmann to think carefully before accepting a possible managerial role at Manchester United, warning that the club’s history of managerial instability presents a significant risk.

Nagelsmann has emerged as a potential candidate to replace under-pressure Michael Carrick, whose future at Old Trafford has come under increasing scrutiny following Manchester United’s disappointing 4–1 defeat to Como in the Champions League.

Carrick is expected to remain in charge for Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth, but reports suggest the club is assessing possible replacements should it decide to make a change.

Kahn Questions Whether United Is the Right Move

Speaking on RTL/Sky Sport, Kahn highlighted the lack of managerial continuity at Manchester United and advised Nagelsmann to consider carefully whether the opportunity would be the right next step in his career.

“The Premier League and Manchester United have not been known for much continuity in the managerial position in recent years,” Kahn said.

He also questioned whether Nagelsmann should immediately take on a role carrying such significant pressure, given the difficulties experienced by previous managers at the club.

Kahn acknowledged Nagelsmann’s ability to develop teams but stressed that the German coach must decide where his qualities could have the greatest impact.

“I think Julian is someone who can develop a club and a team and take them further. Whether Manchester United are the right next step for that is something only he can know,” he said.

Nagelsmann Among Reported Candidates

The 39-year-old has previously managed Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich, before taking charge of the German national team.

He remains highly regarded in European football despite the setbacks of his departure from Bayern and Germany’s disappointing World Cup campaign.

According to reports, Manchester United’s recruitment leadership is considering Nagelsmann as a potential option if Carrick is dismissed. However, no appointment has been announced, and the club’s interest in individual candidates remains subject to ongoing reporting.

Other managers linked with the position include Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte and Unai Emery. Howe has also been reported as a leading contender, while Emery’s existing contract with Aston Villa could complicate any move.

Carrick Under Pressure Ahead of Bournemouth Clash

Manchester United’s 4–1 loss to Como has intensified questions about Carrick’s future, with the team struggling to produce consistent performances.

Sunday’s home fixture against Bournemouth is therefore an important opportunity for United to respond on the pitch and restore confidence among supporters.

A positive result could provide Carrick with breathing room, while another disappointing performance would likely increase scrutiny of his position. However, the outcome of the match will not necessarily determine the club’s final decision.

United’s reported search for possible replacements highlights the uncertainty surrounding the managerial role, with several candidates potentially under consideration.

A Major Decision for Nagelsmann

For Nagelsmann, the prospect of managing one of English football’s most prominent clubs would bring considerable attention and expectations, but also the challenge of working in a high-pressure environment.

Kahn’s comments underline the importance of choosing a role that matches a manager’s strengths and provides the conditions needed to build a competitive team.

For now, Carrick remains expected to lead Manchester United against Bournemouth, while Nagelsmann’s future and the club’s managerial plans remain unresolved.
