China and the United States have revealed new details about last week’s meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping, highlighting several agreements but also showing that major differences remain unresolved.
Among the key developments is an agreement to establish a new US-China artificial intelligence dialogue, with further discussions expected in November. The two countries will also create a communication channel for AI-related incidents aimed at preventing misunderstandings from escalating.
The two sides have also extended their trade truce until 10 January, with reduced tariffs on about $30 billion worth of Chinese goods entering the United States. Washington says China will also purchase at least 10 million metric tons of coal annually in 2027 and 2028.
However, several contentious issues remain unresolved. There was no clear agreement on rare-earth exports, advanced semiconductor restrictions or Taiwan.

Beijing says Xi urged Trump to oppose Taiwan independence, while Trump offered few details about their discussion on the self-governing island.
China also said it would allow more foreign financial firms, including American-backed banks, investment companies and insurers, to apply to operate in the country. Discussions are also continuing over increasing flights between the two countries.
Despite the announcements, there was no joint statement from Washington and Beijing, and neither side appears to have made major concessions on some of their most sensitive disputes.
The talks therefore appear to have produced more communication and limited economic concessions, while leaving major disagreements over technology, trade and Taiwan unresolved.
