Villarreal goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi was ruled out of his side’s UEFA Champions League clash against Napoli after suffering an armed robbery at his home while with his family.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, 13 October 2026, at the Hungarian international’s residence near Valencia, Spain. Spanish media reported that Gulácsi was at home with his wife and their two children when armed intruders entered the property.
Fortunately, no family member was reported to have suffered physical injuries. However, the incident left the goalkeeper shaken, preventing him from playing in Villarreal’s Champions League fixture later that day.
Villarreal Confirm Gulácsi’s Absence
Villarreal announced before kick-off that Gulácsi would be unavailable for the match against Napoli due to personal reasons. Subsequent reports from Spanish media revealed that the absence followed the armed robbery at his home.
The 36-year-old was replaced by Brazilian goalkeeper Luiz Júnior, who took his place between the posts at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
Gulácsi had joined Villarreal from RB Leipzig during the summer after spending more than a decade with the German club. His experience was expected to be valuable to the Spanish side, making his unexpected absence a significant development ahead of the European fixture.
Police Investigate the Armed Robbery
Spanish authorities are investigating the incident. Reports indicated that the suspects had not been apprehended at the time of publication.
Details about the items stolen and the full circumstances surrounding the break-in had not been officially disclosed. The incident has also raised renewed concerns about the security of professional footballers and their families away from the pitch.
For Gulácsi and his family, the immediate priority will be recovering from the frightening experience.
Villarreal Beat Napoli 3-1 Despite Goalkeeper’s Absence
Despite losing their first-choice goalkeeper shortly before the match, Villarreal secured a 3–1 victory over Napoli in the Champions League league phase.
Napoli initially took the lead, but Villarreal responded with three goals to complete the comeback and collect their first points of the European campaign.
Luiz Júnior stepped in for Gulácsi as the Spanish side claimed an important result. The victory offered a positive sporting outcome on an evening overshadowed by the incident involving their goalkeeper.
Support for Gulácsi and His Family
The armed robbery is a deeply distressing event for any family, particularly when children are present. Although no physical injuries were reported, the emotional impact of such an experience can be considerable.
Gulácsi’s absence from the Napoli match reflected the seriousness of the incident and the importance of allowing him time to be with his family.
Attention will now turn to the police investigation and the goalkeeper’s recovery from the ordeal. Further updates are expected as more verified information becomes available.
