Real Madrid Eye Jarell Quansah as Liverpool Hold €70m Buy-Back Advantage

Real Madrid are reportedly keeping a close eye on Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah as they consider further defensive reinforcements for 2027.

The England international has emerged as a transfer target for several major European clubs following an impressive spell in Germany, with Real Madrid, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea all reportedly monitoring his situation.

However, Liverpool could hold the strongest hand in any potential transfer battle because of a €70 million buy-back option included in the agreement that took Quansah from Anfield to Leverkusen.

Real Madrid Scouting Jarell Quansah

According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Real Madrid are regularly scouting Quansah as interest in the 23-year-old defender continues to grow.

The reports come after a busy summer of defensive recruitment at the Santiago Bernabéu. Under José Mourinho, Real Madrid strengthened their backline with the arrivals of Ibrahima Konaté, Marc Cucurella and Denzel Dumfries, adding to a defensive group that already includes Dean Huijsen, Éder Militão and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Real Madrid’s official squad list confirms those players as part of Mourinho’s current first-team group.

Despite those additions, the club is reportedly continuing to assess options for the future, particularly with Antonio Rüdiger’s contract situation approaching a decisive point.

Quansah’s versatility could make him an attractive option. The 23-year-old primarily plays at centre-back but has also demonstrated that he can operate at right-back. His physical strength, pace and ability to play out from defence have contributed to his growing reputation.

Liverpool Have a Major Advantage

The biggest obstacle for Real Madrid could be Liverpool’s contractual position.

Quansah left Liverpool for Bayer Leverkusen in July 2025 after making 58 senior appearances for the Reds. Leverkusen handed him a contract running until June 30, 2030.

However, Liverpool retained a buy-back option as part of the transfer agreement.

The latest reports indicate that the clause is worth €70 million and remains valid until June 15, 2027. That means Liverpool could potentially bring their former academy player back to Anfield if they decide he fits into their long-term plans.

That clause could give Liverpool an important advantage if Real Madrid or another European heavyweight makes a serious move.

Liverpool Yet to Decide on Quansah Return

Quansah’s development since leaving Merseyside has made the buy-back option increasingly significant.

The defender has established himself at Leverkusen and has also become a regular part of England’s senior setup. He has made nine appearances for the Three Lions, including England’s recent UEFA Nations League victory over the Czech Republic on October 6.

England’s official website previously reported that Quansah viewed his 2025 move to Leverkusen as a difficult decision because of his lifelong connection with Liverpool, but the move helped him gain regular first-team opportunities and strengthen his international prospects.

Liverpool’s decision could therefore become one of the most important factors in Quansah’s future.

If the Reds decide to activate their €70 million option, Real Madrid could find themselves competing with Liverpool rather than simply negotiating directly with Leverkusen.

Arsenal and Chelsea Also Watching

Real Madrid are not the only major club interested.

Recent reports indicate that Arsenal and Chelsea are also following Quansah’s situation. Arsenal’s interest appears particularly significant, with reports claiming the Gunners made a €65 million offer for the defender during the summer, although Leverkusen rejected the proposal.

That failed approach highlights how highly Quansah is currently valued in the transfer market.

With his Leverkusen contract running until 2030, the German club are under no immediate pressure to sell. However, Liverpool’s buy-back option could dramatically influence negotiations before it expires in June 2027.

Quansah’s Rise Continues

Quansah’s rise has been impressive.

After progressing through Liverpool’s academy, he made his senior debut for the club and eventually accumulated 58 first-team appearances before moving to Germany. Leverkusen secured his services in 2025, handing him a five-year contract.

His performances in Germany have subsequently helped him establish himself at international level.

At just 23, Quansah now finds himself on the radar of some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Real Madrid’s reported interest adds another layer to a transfer situation that could become increasingly complicated over the next few months.

For now, there is no confirmed agreement between Quansah and Real Madrid. But with Liverpool holding a €70 million buy-back option and Arsenal and Chelsea also reportedly interested, the England defender could become one of the most closely watched defenders in the 2027 transfer market.

One thing is clear: Liverpool’s buy-back clause could prove decisive in determining where Jarell Quansah plays next.
