Chelsea’s defensive struggles deepened on Friday night as Brentford scored three times to condemn Xabi Alonso’s side to another damaging Premier League defeat.
Chelsea’s early-season attacking excitement has begun to fade, with their latest setback exposing familiar defensive problems and raising fresh questions about Xabi Alonso’s tactical approach.
The Blues suffered a 3-0 defeat at Brentford, turning what had been a closely contested encounter into a heavy loss after the hosts opened the scoring in the second half.
The result means Chelsea have now conceded 12 Premier League goals, the highest total in the division at this stage, although they have played one more match than every other team.
For Alonso, the defensive statistics are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
Joao Pedro’s absence affects Chelsea attack
Chelsea entered the match without Joao Pedro, who was ruled out with a knee injury.
The Brazilian had been one of the team’s most influential players during the opening weeks of the season, recording three goals and three assists in four Premier League appearances.
His absence was particularly significant because of his ability to combine with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers while also creating opportunities for himself.
Alonso turned to experienced striker Danny Welbeck, but the 35-year-old struggled to influence the match.
Welbeck completed his role neatly in possession but received limited service and recorded just 17 touches before being replaced in the 71st minute.
Chelsea lose control after Brentford opener
For much of the first half and early stages of the second period, the game remained evenly balanced.
That changed in the 61st minute when Jaidon Anthony headed Brentford into the lead.
Chelsea were unable to respond effectively, and the home side took advantage of the visitors’ defensive problems to add two more goals late in the match.
What had looked like a match that could be decided by a single goal ultimately turned into a comfortable victory for Brentford.
Alonso admitted afterwards that his side had lost consistency and competitive intensity during the second half.
“Small details can be decisive,” the Chelsea manager said after the match.
Set-piece problems continue
One of Chelsea’s most persistent problems has been defending set pieces, and Brentford exposed that weakness again.
Anthony’s header from a corner was Chelsea’s fifth set-piece goal conceded this season.
Since the beginning of last season, Chelsea have conceded 23 goals from set pieces, more than any other Premier League side over that period.
That statistic is particularly notable because Chelsea have previously invested in specialist coaching to address the problem.
The club appointed Bernardo Cueva from Brentford two years ago before replacing him this summer with another set-piece specialist, Austin MacPhee.
Stand-in captain Levi Colwill acknowledged that Chelsea’s performance defending dead-ball situations was below the required standard.
“Not good enough. At times we have been bullied in the box and we definitely need to improve,” Colwill said.
Alonso still searching for the right formula
The defeat also highlighted the extent of Alonso’s experimentation during the opening weeks of his Chelsea tenure.
The Spanish manager has already used different tactical systems and handed 11 players their Premier League debuts.
Among Friday’s debutants were midfielder Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, who became Chelsea’s youngest-ever Premier League player at 16, and veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson, who made his first appearance for the club against his former side.
Chelsea also fielded their oldest starting XI since May 2023, with Henderson joined by Welbeck and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
Despite the additional experience, Chelsea were unable to maintain their competitiveness once Brentford gained the advantage.
Rogers struggles without Joao Pedro
Morgan Rogers has been an important part of Chelsea’s attacking setup since joining from Aston Villa, but the England international endured one of his quieter performances against Brentford.
With striker Emmanuel Emegha still unavailable and yet to make his Chelsea debut, Rogers eventually moved into a more advanced position.
However, Chelsea lacked the attacking fluidity that had characterised some of their earlier performances.
That has increased the importance of Joao Pedro’s recovery, particularly given how effectively he had linked with Palmer and Rogers before his injury.
International break gives Alonso time to work
Chelsea now head into an extended international break with three weeks to assess what went wrong and work on the problems exposed at Brentford.
The immediate concern is defensive.
Alonso has inherited some weaknesses, but the new manager is also still searching for the tactical structure and consistency that will allow Chelsea to control matches for longer periods.
The manager acknowledged that his team must improve rather than search for excuses.
“We need to look at each other and know that we have to work and improve because there is still a long way to go,” Alonso said.

Chelsea’s defeat at Brentford highlights a difficult balance for Alonso.
The manager arrived with an attacking philosophy that initially produced goals and positive results, but the defensive side of the team has not developed at the same pace.
The numbers are particularly striking: 12 league goals conceded and five set-piece goals allowed already this season.
The absence of Joao Pedro also demonstrated how much Chelsea have depended on his combination of goals, assists and chance creation.
