Accra Sports Stadium Set for Black Stars Return as GFA Promises Gambia Qualifier Will Go Ahead

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is confident that the Accra Sports Stadium will be ready to host the Black Stars’ crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against The Gambia, despite ongoing concerns over the condition of the facility.

Domestic football has currently been suspended at the Accra Sports Stadium as rehabilitation work continues to bring the pitch and facility up to the standards required for international football.

But with Ghana’s AFCON qualification campaign approaching, the pressure is mounting to complete the work on time.

The GFA Communications Director, Henry Asante Twum, has assured football supporters that the stadium will be ready when Ghana welcomes The Gambia.

“I’m very certain that before we play that game against The Gambia, the pitch will be ready,” Asante Twum said.

Why Accra Sports Stadium is currently closed

The suspension of domestic football at the stadium has already affected clubs using the venue.

Accra Hearts of Oak have been forced to relocate their opening home matches of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season to the University of Ghana Stadium.

The move is intended to allow rehabilitation work to continue without the demands of regular domestic fixtures putting additional pressure on the playing surface.

For the GFA, however, the biggest deadline is now the Black Stars’ AFCON qualifier.

GFA confident pitch will be ready

Asante Twum explained that the decision to suspend domestic football was partly connected to preparations for the international fixture.

He said the GFA has been engaging Greengrass Technologies, the company responsible for work on the pitch.

According to him, discussions have already taken place and work is expected to intensify.

“The only approved venue in Ghana today is the Accra Sports Stadium.”

He added that the company was expected to step up work on the pitch following discussions with the GFA.

The development highlights the importance of the Accra Sports Stadium to Ghana’s international football programme.

Accra Sports Stadium currently Ghana’s only approved international venue

One of the biggest concerns is that the Accra Sports Stadium is currently the only venue in Ghana approved to host international matches.

That leaves very little room for error.

If rehabilitation work is not completed on schedule or the facility fails to meet the required standards, Ghana could face serious complications ahead of its home qualifier.

The GFA will therefore be under pressure to ensure that the stadium meets the necessary requirements before CAF’s assessment and the match itself.

Black Stars begin road to AFCON 2027

Ghana is preparing for the start of its 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign.

The Black Stars are scheduled to begin their campaign away against Côte d’Ivoire before returning home to face The Gambia.
