Florida has made history by electing its first Black governor, with Republican candidate Byron Donalds projected to defeat his Democratic challenger in the state’s gubernatorial election.
Donalds, who received the backing of US President Donald Trump, emerged victorious in a closely watched contest to replace outgoing Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, who was unable to seek another term because of term limits.
Republican Senator Ashley Moody was also projected to retain her seat after defeating Democratic challenger Angie Nixon in a special election for the Senate seat previously held by Marco Rubio.

Byron Donalds Makes Florida History
Donalds, who has represented Florida in the US House of Representatives since 2021, entered the gubernatorial race with strong support from Trump.

His relationship with Trump has been a major feature of his political career. He was also reportedly considered among the potential candidates to become Trump’s running mate during the 2024 presidential election.

Donalds is succeeding DeSantis, who served as governor for two terms and was prevented by term limits from contesting another election.
Ashley Moody Retains Senate Seat
Republican Ashley Moody was also projected to win her special Senate election against Democrat Angie Nixon.
The contest was held to fill the seat previously occupied by Marco Rubio before his departure from the Senate.
Nixon had secured the Democratic nomination after an unexpected primary victory, but her campaign faced the challenge of competing against Moody’s considerably stronger fundraising position.
Moody’s projected victory provides another important result for Republicans in Florida.
Democrats Record Surprising Victories
Despite the Republican victories in the statewide contests, Democrats also recorded notable successes in Florida.
