US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar says she will move out of her Washington, DC, home after a federal search left her feeling unsafe, as an ongoing criminal investigation into her family’s immigration paperwork draws renewed attention ahead of the November midterm elections.
The Minnesota Democrat disclosed her decision during an interview with MS NOW on Wednesday, October 21. Federal agents searched the property on October 12 under a judicially authorised warrant as part of an ongoing investigation, according to the US Department of Justice.
Omar said the publicity surrounding the search had raised safety concerns for her and her family, particularly because their home address had become public.
Omar recalled waking at approximately 6am to find Homeland Security Investigations agents knocking on the doors of her residence.
According to her account, the officers searched the property for four to five hours and seized 17 items, including phones, notebooks, a Somali-language children’s book and a vintage camera that had been given to her husband as a gift.
She described the agents as “intrusive but polite”, saying they recorded the items they took and returned other belongings to their places.
The Justice Department has confirmed that the search formed part of a federal criminal investigation but has publicly disclosed limited information about the case.
The Associated Press, citing a person briefed on the investigation, reported that authorities were examining potential fraud involving immigration paperwork belonging to Omar’s family. Some of her relatives have reportedly received grand jury subpoenas. The precise scope of the investigation has not been fully disclosed.

Omar has rejected any suggestion that she committed wrongdoing and said she remains confident in her position.
“I’m confident in the fact that I didn’t do anything wrong,” she said in the interview.
Born in Somalia, Omar arrived in the United States with her family at the age of 12 after they obtained asylum. She became a US citizen in 2000.
Addressing questions surrounding her immigration history, she challenged the suggestion that she could have deliberately participated in a scheme to deceive immigration authorities as a child.
No formal charges against Omar were established in the reports available at the time of publication. The investigation remains ongoing, and allegations under examination should not be treated as proven misconduct.
The search has triggered criticism from congressional Democrats, some of whom questioned the timing because it occurred only weeks before the November 3 midterm elections, when voters will determine control of the US House of Representatives and Senate.
Omar has frequently clashed with President Donald Trump, who has publicly criticised her and raised questions about her immigration status. She has described the investigation as political intimidation, while the Justice Department has characterised the search as part of a criminal investigation.
Trump has also made disparaging remarks about Omar in recent public comments. However, the administration’s political disputes with the congresswoman and the stated purpose of the federal investigation are separate matters.
Omar is seeking re-election in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis.
Despite the search and the resulting concerns over her family’s safety, she has indicated that she intends to continue her political work. Her decision to leave the Washington residence reflects her stated security concerns, while the federal investigation continues without a publicly established finding of wrongdoing.
