Demichelis Calls Maresca His ‘Brother’ Ahead of RB Leipzig’s Champions League Clash with Man City

RB Leipzig head coach Martin Demichelis has described Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca as one of his closest friends in football, saying it will be an honour to face him in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League encounter.

The two coaches share a long-standing friendship dating back to their playing days in Spain, where they lived next door to each other while representing Malaga.

Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated meeting, Demichelis revealed that their relationship goes beyond football, with their families also sharing close ties over the years.

“I know Enzo very well – he’s one of my best friends in football. I’d say we’re almost like brothers,” Demichelis said.

“We lived together – or rather, right next door to each other – in Spain. I’m familiar with his philosophy, his ideas.

“Our kids grew up together. Early on, as players, we both wanted to become coaches.

“We started the journey together. He’s very intelligent and pragmatic, and it’ll be an honour to take the pitch with him tomorrow.”

Maresca Tried to Discover Leipzig’s Starting Line-Up

Demichelis also revealed that Maresca contacted him on Monday in an attempt to discover RB Leipzig’s likely starting line-up ahead of their Champions League meeting.

The Argentine coach, however, refused to reveal his team’s selection, joking that his former neighbour would have to wait until matchday to find out.

“Enzo is a winner. He’ll be doing everything he can to win titles with Manchester City,” Demichelis added.

“There was a lot of interest in my line-up when we spoke yesterday. We think very much alike when it comes to football.

“Enzo wants to know our line-up. I won’t say anything. He’ll find out tomorrow.”

The comments highlight the competitive nature of the encounter despite the strong personal relationship between the two managers.

Demichelis Reflects on His Manchester City Years

Demichelis also reflected on his time at Manchester City, where he spent three seasons as a player.

During his spell at the Etihad Stadium, the former Argentina international won the 2013/14 Premier League title and two League Cups.

Asked about the club’s historical financial charges and the possibility of titles being affected, Demichelis said the matter was not his concern as he remained focused on his current responsibilities at RB Leipzig.

“I spent three fantastic years there, but it was a long time ago,” he said.

“It’s not interesting, it’s a long time ago, football has changed.

“I’m the coach of RB Leipzig and all I want tomorrow is a good game from RB Leipzig.”

With their personal friendship temporarily put aside, Demichelis and Maresca will now focus on leading their respective teams in a crucial European contest.
