Ghana’s Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) is pursuing suspected accomplices in Ghana following the arrest of a Syrian national carrying 46.7 kilogrammes of cocaine at Beirut’s Rafic Hariri International Airport in Lebanon.
The seizure, which took place on Saturday, October 31, 2026, has been described by Lebanon’s General Directorate of Customs as the largest drug seizure in the history of the airport.
The suspect, identified only by his initials B.H., arrived from Accra aboard Middle East Airlines flight MEA 576 with the cocaine concealed in his luggage.
According to Lebanese customs authorities, officers discovered 40 packages containing the substance during an intelligence-led operation conducted in collaboration with the country’s General Security.
Lebanese authorities said the cocaine had been concealed using sophisticated packaging and insulation techniques designed to evade detection by airport scanning equipment.
Electronic tracking devices were also discovered inside the packages, highlighting the level of preparation involved in the suspected smuggling operation.
Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed that the suspect had entered Lebanon through the Masnaa border crossing several weeks earlier before travelling to Accra and returning with the shipment.
Authorities suspect he had been assigned to transport and deliver the drugs as part of an organised international smuggling operation.
The suspect was arrested, while the cocaine and other items found during the operation were confiscated.
Investigations are continuing to identify the intended recipient of the shipment, establish who organised its transportation and trace other individuals allegedly involved.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s Narcotics Control Commission has confirmed that it is working to identify and arrest individuals suspected of assisting the operation in Ghana.
In a statement issued on Sunday, November 1, NACOC said the arrest followed a coordinated controlled delivery operation involving Ghanaian and Lebanese drug law enforcement authorities.
The Commission explained that the operation was designed to identify and apprehend individuals operating at both ends of the drug supply chain.
It was also intended to gather intelligence that could help dismantle the wider international criminal network behind the shipment.
NACOC said the operation demonstrated the importance of international cooperation and intelligence-sharing in tackling organised drug trafficking.
The Lebanese General Directorate of Customs said investigations were ongoing under the supervision of the competent judicial authorities, with the aim of identifying the intended recipient and everyone connected to the shipment.
The operation highlights the importance of cooperation between Ghanaian and Lebanese security agencies in addressing cross-border drug trafficking.
With NACOC pursuing suspected accomplices in Ghana and Lebanese authorities continuing their investigations, attention is now focused on uncovering the wider network behind the 46.7-kilogramme cocaine shipment.
