Joshua Zirkzee could yet revive his Manchester United career, with Michael Carrick reportedly retaining faith in the Dutch forward despite growing speculation about a possible January departure.
The 25-year-old has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter at Old Trafford and was linked with a move away during the summer transfer window.
Fiorentina and Everton were among the clubs reportedly interested in signing him, but a move failed to materialise before the deadline. Fiorentina explored a loan deal, while Everton were also linked with an attempt to strengthen their attacking options.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Zirkzee remains at United and is continuing to compete for a place in the team.
His situation could become clearer when the transfer window reopens in January, although a departure is not inevitable.
Zirkzee has yet to establish himself as a regular Premier League starter this season, but his recent appearances suggest he remains part of Carrick’s plans.
The forward featured as a substitute in United’s 1–1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, October 10, entering the match in the 59th minute.
United took the lead through Bryan Mbeumo in the 73rd minute, but Dominic Solanke scored a stoppage-time equaliser to deny Carrick’s side all three points.
Although the result increased pressure on United, Zirkzee’s continued involvement gives him an opportunity to demonstrate that he can contribute more consistently.
The Dutchman is understood to remain committed to improving his situation at Old Trafford and convincing the coaching staff that he deserves a larger role.
However, opportunities may depend on United’s results, the manager’s long-term position and the club’s plans for strengthening the attack.

Zirkzee’s future attracted attention during the summer, when Fiorentina explored a possible loan move from Manchester United.
The Italian club were interested in bringing the forward back to Serie A, where he previously played for Parma and Bologna before joining United from Bologna in 2024.
Everton were also linked with an approach as they assessed their attacking options before the transfer deadline.
The interest reflected Zirkzee’s need for more regular playing time, but United ultimately retained him in their squad.
Napoli and AC Milan have also been linked with the Netherlands international, although any future move would depend on concrete interest, United’s willingness to negotiate and the player’s own circumstances.
For now, there is no confirmed agreement for Zirkzee to leave in January.
Benjamin Šeško’s fitness is another factor that could influence United’s decision-making.
The Slovenia international has been sidelined by a recurring shin injury, leaving Carrick with fewer established options at centre-forward.
United have been cautious about his recovery, and the uncertainty surrounding his availability could affect whether the club attempts to recruit another striker during the January window.
If United decide to bring in another forward, competition for attacking places could increase. Alternatively, if the club opts against signing a replacement, Zirkzee may have a greater opportunity to establish himself in the squad.
Bryan Mbeumo has also been used in a central attacking role, providing Carrick with another option while Šeško remains unavailable.
The club must therefore balance its recruitment plans with the need to maintain sufficient depth for the second half of the season.
Uncertainty surrounding Carrick’s own position adds another layer to the situation.
United have taken six points from their opening six league matches, and the 1–1 draw against Tottenham extended the scrutiny surrounding the team’s performances.
A managerial change before January could alter the club’s tactical approach and affect which players are considered central to its plans.
For Zirkzee, continuity could provide an opportunity to build on the minutes he has received, while a new manager might reassess the squad and its attacking options.
United’s immediate priority, however, will be improving their results and finding greater consistency in front of goal.
Zirkzee’s Manchester United future remains unresolved as the club weighs its attacking needs against the possibility of further recruitment.
His limited starting opportunities and reported interest from Italian clubs mean a January exit cannot be ruled out. However, United’s decision to retain him during the summer and his continued involvement under Carrick suggest the door remains open.
Much will depend on Šeško’s recovery, United’s form and whether the club identifies another forward as a priority.
Until those factors become clearer, Zirkzee has an opportunity to make a stronger case for himself at Old Trafford rather than assume his time at the club is coming to an end.
