Sudan Army Chief Rejects Talks, Vows to Retake All RSF Territory

Sudan’s war is showing no sign of easing as military chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan rejects negotiations and vows to reclaim every inch of territory held by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), raising fresh concerns over the prospects for a political settlement to the country’s devastating conflict.

Speaking in Village 5 in northern Sudan’s Merowe locality on Tuesday, al-Burhan said the army would continue its military campaign until the RSF was removed from Sudan.

His remarks came as fighting intensified in West Kordofan, thousands of civilians were displaced in Blue Nile state, and international efforts to bring Sudan’s rival factions to the negotiating table continued.

The developments highlight the widening gap between Sudan’s military leadership, which is insisting on a battlefield solution, and international efforts calling for a Sudanese-led political process to end a war that has already displaced around 13 million people and killed tens of thousands.

War Continues Into Its Fourth Year

The Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF have been fighting since April 2023, when a power struggle between their leaders erupted into open conflict.

At the centre of the dispute were plans to integrate the powerful paramilitary force into Sudan’s regular army.

The war has since killed tens of thousands of people and displaced around 13 million, according to UN and international estimates.

Despite repeated international efforts to secure a ceasefire, fighting has continued and the conflict has created one of the world’s largest displacement and humanitarian crises.

Fighting Intensifies in Kordofan

Al-Burhan’s comments came as violence was reported in West Kordofan, where 10 civilians were killed and several others wounded in an attack allegedly carried out by the RSF, according to the Dar Hamar Emergency Committee.

The local emergency group accused the RSF of multiple violations against civilians in Abu Ajal village, in the southeastern countryside of En Nahud.

The claims have not been independently verified.

The RSF has reportedly been reinforcing its presence in West Kordofan as the army advances towards En Nahud and Al Khuway, following military gains in neighbouring North Kordofan.

The Kordofan region has become an increasingly important battleground because of its strategic position connecting Sudan’s western and eastern areas.

Thousands Displaced in Blue Nile

The humanitarian situation is also deteriorating in Blue Nile state.

The International Organization for Migration said more than 5,500 people were displaced from villages over a three-day period as insecurity worsened.

The latest displacement adds to the millions of Sudanese who have been forced from their homes since the war began.

Humanitarian organisations continue to warn that fighting, displacement and restricted access to essential services are deepening the crisis.

US Calls for Sudanese-Led Peace Process

While al-Burhan has rejected negotiations, the United States continues to push for a political solution.

Massad Boulos, US President Donald Trump’s senior adviser for Arab and African affairs, said Sudan’s own political forces must take the lead in efforts to end the war.

Writing on X, Boulos called for an inclusive, Sudanese-owned and Sudanese-led national dialogue, followed by a transition towards civilian government.

The US State Department said last month that neither the Sudanese Armed Forces nor the RSF, nor their respective leaders, represent legitimate constitutional governance for Sudan.

No Clear End to the Conflict

Al-Burhan’s latest comments underline the widening gap between the military leadership’s position and international efforts to secure negotiations.

With fighting continuing in Kordofan and Blue Nile and new displacement reported, prospects for an immediate ceasefire remain uncertain.

For millions of Sudanese civilians, the continuation of the war means further displacement, insecurity and humanitarian hardship as the rival forces remain committed to competing military objectives.
