US President Donald Trump says American B-1 bombers were withdrawn from RAF Fairford in Britain because of security threats, amid an ongoing counter-terrorism investigation into suspicious activity near the strategic military base.
President Donald Trump has confirmed that the United States moved its bombers out of RAF Fairford in the United Kingdom after receiving information about potential threats to the base.
The Pentagon confirmed that US bombers deployed to RAF Fairford had returned to their home stations in the United States. Roughly a dozen B-1 aircraft had reportedly been operating from the Gloucestershire base before the sudden redeployment.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said the aircraft had not been moved by accident and indicated that Washington had information about a possible threat.
“There were some threats,” Trump said, explaining that the United States decided against unnecessarily exposing the aircraft and personnel to potential danger.
Trump also suggested US authorities had information about those behind the threat, although he did not publicly identify them or provide details about the intelligence that prompted the decision.
The development follows a major security incident near RAF Fairford on September 27.
Five British men in their 20s were initially arrested after suspicious activity involving vehicles near the airbase triggered a major police response. Petrol was subsequently found in the vehicles, although investigators said no explosive devices were discovered. The five men were later released on police bail while investigations continued.
A sixth suspect, a 25-year-old dual British-Iranian national, was later arrested in London as part of the investigation. He has also been released on bail.
British counter-terrorism authorities say the investigation remains complex and that several possible lines of inquiry, including potential foreign-state involvement, are being examined.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham previously said there were “strong indications” Iran had played a role in the incident near RAF Fairford, although he stressed that the police investigation remained ongoing.
Iran has strongly rejected allegations that it was involved.
US Vice President JD Vance said the bombers had been moved out of an “abundance of caution,” while alleging that Washington remained concerned about potential Iranian activity targeting US interests.
However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio adopted a more cautious position.
Rubio said military assets are routinely redeployed and that he would not directly connect the movement of the bombers to the security incident at RAF Fairford. He also said Washington continued to have confidence in the security of its military facilities and in cooperation with British authorities.
RAF Fairford, located in Gloucestershire about 145 kilometres west of London, is an important forward operating location for US heavy bombers in Europe.
The base is capable of supporting aircraft including the B-1 and other long-range bombers and has played a role in US military operations involving the Middle East.
Its strategic importance has increased during the conflict involving Iran. Britain had allowed the United States to use Fairford for certain defensive operations against Iranian missile threats, according to Reuters.
Iran has previously warned that military bases used for attacks against its territory could be considered legitimate targets.
The removal of the bombers could temporarily reduce Washington’s ability to rapidly launch additional sorties from Britain if military operations against Iran intensify.
Christoph Bergs, a research analyst at the Royal United Services Institute, told Reuters that the move could reduce the United States’ ability to quickly surge aircraft against Iran.
Alternative locations could include Diego Garcia or bases in the Gulf, although any deployment would depend on capacity, security considerations and agreements with US allies.
Despite the withdrawal, the Pentagon says America’s bomber force remains capable of conducting long-range precision operations from the continental United States and other locations.
For now, the exact nature of the threat that prompted the sudden movement of the aircraft has not been publicly disclosed, while the British counter-terrorism investigation continues.
