Court of Appeal Dismisses Abronye’s Bid to Halt Samson Anyenini Defamation Suit

The Court of Appeal in Kumasi has dismissed another attempt by Bono Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, to halt a defamation lawsuit brought against him and Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited by lawyer and journalist Samson Lardy Anyenini.

The three-member panel, presided over by Justice Eric Baah, dismissed Abronye’s application for a stay of proceedings on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, while an interlocutory appeal remains pending. The court also awarded GH¢10,000 in costs against him.

The ruling marks the third time Abronye has attempted to prevent the substantive defamation case from proceeding.

Background to the Defamation Case

The lawsuit, filed in 2025, concerns statements allegedly broadcast on Wontumi TV and Radio in which Abronye accused Anyenini of dishonesty and corruption.

According to the suit, Abronye alleged that Anyenini had received US$50,000 to use his position as host of Newsfile on Joy FM and Joy News TV to discredit Assin South Member of Parliament Rev. John Ntim Fordjour.

Anyenini has denied the allegations and is seeking damages and other legal reliefs against Abronye, Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited and Kwaku Kyeremanteng Nkansah, a host at the media company.

The allegations remain matters for determination in the defamation proceedings and should not be treated as established facts.

Earlier Legal Challenges

Abronye initially challenged the competence of the lawsuit, seeking to have the action struck out before the substantive claims could be heard.

In November 2025, the Kumasi High Court declined to strike out Anyenini’s case. It ordered a reassessment of filing fees and rejected other procedural objections raised by Abronye.

The latest Court of Appeal decision means the defamation proceedings have not been halted by this application. It does not, by itself, determine whether the alleged statements were defamatory.

The substantive case concerns the claims made about Anyenini and the remedies he is seeking from the defendants. The latest ruling addresses the application to suspend proceedings rather than the truth or otherwise of the underlying allegations.
