Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes Manchester City’s financial-rule breaches may have contributed to his dismissal in 2016, after United missed out on Champions League qualification to their city rivals.
Van Gaal, who managed United from 2014 to 2016, made the comments in an interview with The Athletic, reflecting on the circumstances surrounding his departure from Old Trafford.
United finished fifth in the 2015–16 Premier League season with 66 points, level with Manchester City, who secured fourth place and the final Champions League qualification spot on goal difference.
Van Gaal was dismissed just 48 hours after guiding United to FA Cup glory, with José Mourinho subsequently appointed as his replacement.
“For me, at the time, missing out on the Champions League in 2016 was probably the deciding factor in my dismissal from Manchester United,” Van Gaal said.
He added that the decision had brought significant personal consequences and suffering, arguing that the outcome could have been different had the competition been fair.
Van Gaal’s remarks come amid a major development in the Premier League’s long-running financial case against Manchester City.
On September 29, 2026, the Premier League announced that an independent commission had found City guilty of serious financial-rule breaches covering the nine seasons from 2009–10 to 2017–18.
The commission found that the club had used arrangements described as sham sponsorship contracts to inflate revenue and reduce costs, submitted misleading financial information and breached spending limits. It also upheld the majority of charges relating to City’s failure to cooperate with the league’s investigation.
Manchester City has rejected the allegations and challenged the findings. Any further consequences will depend on the applicable legal and regulatory processes.
The period covered by the commission’s findings overlaps with the 2015–16 season in which City finished ahead of United on goal difference.
However, Van Gaal’s comments express his view of how the missed Champions League place affected his employment. They do not establish that the financial breaches were the direct cause of United’s decision to dismiss him.
Van Gaal argued that the consequences of missing out on Champions League football in 2016 extended beyond the league table.
The Dutchman won the FA Cup in his final season at United, but the club’s fifth-place finish meant they failed to qualify for the Champions League through their league position.
He said the situation could not now be reversed, adding that even the English Football Association could not change what happened.
Van Gaal’s comments have renewed debate about the potential sporting consequences of financial-rule breaches and whether clubs that believe they were disadvantaged could pursue remedies through football’s legal and regulatory systems.
Any question of compensation or retrospective changes to past results would require separate legal and regulatory consideration.
The Manchester City case has become one of the most closely watched financial disputes in English football because it concerns multiple seasons and a wide range of alleged and established breaches.
The independent commission’s findings have intensified scrutiny of financial regulation in the Premier League. City’s challenge to the findings, however, means the dispute remains subject to further proceedings.
For Van Gaal, the case has revived memories of a disappointing end to his United tenure, despite the FA Cup triumph.
His comments raise a broader question for football authorities: how should the game address claims that financial-rule violations may have affected competition results, qualification places and the careers of managers?
For now, Van Gaal has shared his perspective on the events of 2016. The question of whether City’s financial breaches altered the outcome of that season’s Champions League race, and whether any remedy is possible, remains separate from his personal account of why United dismissed him.
