Cristiano Ronaldo has accused Portugal coach Jorge Jesus of twice breaking his word, saying a failed agreement over his omission against Norway led to his departure from the national team camp.
The 41-year-old forward gave his version of the dispute in a lengthy statement, while making clear that he remains available for Portugal after serving any punishment imposed by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).
Ronaldo said he and Jesus had initially agreed that he would miss Portugal’s Nations League matches against Norway and Denmark as part of a plan to manage his fitness.
However, Ronaldo claims that on the day of the Norway match, Jesus told him he would play for 30 minutes.
“Everyone knows the rest. I warmed up from halftime onwards, watched the minutes tick by and wasn’t called on,” Ronaldo said.
“The manager had broken his word to me.”
Ronaldo said a subsequent meeting with Jesus, attended by Al Nassr sporting director Simao Coutinho, resulted in another agreement.
According to Ronaldo, Jesus was expected to clarify the situation at his next press conference and explain that the forward had never demanded playing time, had respected the coach’s decisions and that asking him to warm up without eventually bringing him on had been a mistake.
Ronaldo said an eight-point document was prepared outlining what had been discussed.
He stressed that the agreement did not require Jesus to apologise to him, but said the coach’s subsequent public comments were inconsistent with their private discussion.
“It was the second time he had broken his word to me,” Ronaldo said.
“I decided to leave the training camp without waiting for any further broken promises.”
Jesus has rejected Ronaldo’s version of events.
After Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on Sunday, the coach said he had made no such agreement with the veteran forward.
Jesus nevertheless left the door open for Ronaldo to return to the national team.
The Portuguese Football Federation has not immediately commented on Ronaldo’s statement.
Ronaldo also apologised for failing to greet supporters following the Norway match and acknowledged that leaving his teammates had been inappropriate.
The Portugal captain said his status as the team’s leader made his actions more serious.
“The consequences of my actions must be assessed and punished by the Portuguese Football Federation,” he said.
The comments suggest Ronaldo accepts that disciplinary action could follow, despite continuing to dispute how the disagreement with Jesus was handled.
Despite the fallout, Ronaldo insisted that his international career is not simply heading towards a ceremonial farewell.
He said he intends to remain available for Portugal provided he is physically fit and continues performing for Al Nassr.
“If I’m physically fit, playing for my club – scoring goals, I hope – after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I’ll be available, as I’ve always been until now, to compete and win for our national team,” Ronaldo said.
The dispute now leaves Portugal facing a delicate situation involving its captain and record goalscorer, with Ronaldo making clear that he still wants to contribute to the national team while Jesus maintains that there was no agreement of the kind described by the player.
