Keta Fans Back André Ayew for Potential GFA Presidential Run

Football supporters in Keta have backed reports that former Black Stars captain André “Dede” Ayew is considering a bid for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidency, saying his experience could help bring a new direction to Ghana football.

Football fans in Keta have expressed support for former Black Stars captain André Ayew amid reports that he could consider contesting the next Ghana Football Association presidential election.

Ayew, who has spent much of his career at the highest levels of European and international football, is being mentioned by some supporters as a potential figure capable of contributing to efforts to reset Ghana football.

However, there has been no official declaration from Ayew confirming that he will contest the GFA presidency.

Ayew’s Experience Fuels Debate

The possibility of Ayew entering the GFA leadership race has generated discussion among football followers, particularly in his home region.

Supporters in Keta believe his long experience as a Black Stars player and former captain could give him valuable insight into some of the challenges facing Ghana’s national teams.

The reports have also opened a broader debate over whether a former Black Stars player should lead the country’s football administration.

Names such as Asamoah Gyan and Stephen Appiah have also been mentioned in discussions among football fans, although there is no confirmed presidential contest involving any of the three at this stage.

Black Stars Crisis Puts GFA Under Pressure

The discussion about possible future leadership comes at a difficult moment for Ghana football.

The Black Stars opened their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with consecutive defeats, losing 2-0 away to Côte d’Ivoire before suffering a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The results left Ghana without a point from its opening two Group C matches and intensified scrutiny of the national team’s management and the GFA.

The Gambia’s comeback in Accra was particularly damaging, with Ghana surrendering a two-goal advantage before losing 4-2.

Carlos Queiroz Leaves Black Stars

The poor start to the AFCON qualifiers was followed by the departure of head coach Carlos Queiroz.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed on October 1 that it and Queiroz had mutually agreed to terminate his contract following discussions between both parties.

The Portuguese coach had only been reappointed in September after leading Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz said the decision was made in the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football.

His departure has left the GFA searching for another coach ahead of Ghana’s next AFCON qualifying matches.

Search Committee Formed for New Coach

Following Queiroz’s exit, the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation established a five-member Search Committee to oversee the recruitment of a new Black Stars head coach.

The committee is chaired by Fred Pappoe and includes former Black Stars player Anthony Baffoe, lawyer Agbesi Dzakpasu, former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah and Faisal Chibsah.

The committee’s work comes as the GFA seeks to stabilise the national team after the disappointing opening results in the AFCON qualifiers.

Debate Over Government and GFA

The Black Stars’ poor start has also renewed calls from some sections of the public for major changes within the GFA.

Some Ghanaians have called for government intervention or even the dissolution of the association.

However, the GFA operates as an autonomous football governing body, and direct government interference in its administration could raise concerns under FIFA’s rules on the independence of national football associations.

FIFA has historically taken action against member associations where government interference has been deemed to undermine the independence of football administration.

For now, the focus remains on Ghana’s next steps, including the appointment of a new Black Stars coach and efforts to revive the country’s AFCON qualifying campaign.

Could Dede Ayew Enter the GFA Race?

The reports surrounding André Ayew have added another dimension to the growing conversation about the future leadership of Ghana football.

The former captain has yet to publicly confirm a presidential bid, meaning any discussion of his candidacy remains speculative at this stage.

If he eventually decides to enter the race, his playing experience, international profile and understanding of the Black Stars would likely become central to the debate among Ghanaian football stakeholders.

For now, however, Ghana’s immediate challenge is on the pitch: rebuilding the Black Stars and recovering from their difficult start to the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
